In November 2009 Walter Pillai was ordained as a Catholic priest by the Bishop of Kavieng Ambose Kiapseni at Palie on Lihiri Island, New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea. The ceremony began with a traditional activity representing the rebirth of Walter and the handing over of him by his mother and clan members from traditional life to the priesthood.
